Farmtopia is an EU-funded Horizon Europe project dedicated to making advanced digital agricultural tools accessible to all farmers - especially small and medium-sized producers.

The Need for Climate-Resilient Agriculture

Agriculture in Vojvodina, Serbia, faces increasing climate variability, with prolonged droughts and irregular rainfall creating instability. Transitioning to climate- and drought-resilient crops offers a way forward, but farmers continue to face persistent barriers: limited knowledge and resources, unpredictable returns on investment, restricted market access, and the digital divide.

SOLUTION

How will ABS Veggie meet the challenge?

ABS Veggie is a farmer-focused digital agriculture solution (DAS), developed for smallholder vegetable producers, especially those growing old and biodiversity-friendly varieties such as cabbage and onion.

The platform supports farmers facing climate stress, irrigation challenges and production uncertainties by offering data-driven field-specific insights.

Built on the existing ABS platform (TRL6), ABS Veggie integrates new features to reach TRL8 by the end of the project.

Production module for old vegetable varieties

Provides local, variety-specific recommendations by integrating data (e.g. Sentinel), and genebank datasets to support decision-making throughout the growing season.

Supplier-Farmer Network module

Facilitates improved communication and transparency between farmers and input suppliers by enabling tailored input offers, based on anonymized farmer production plans and demand.

Farmtopia Digital Field Book Module

Integrated via API, this module enables standardized recording of operations on the plot, ensuring traceability, compliance and compliance with sustainability standards.

EO Satellite Observation of Production Plots

The EO module developed through the Farmtopia project enables satellite monitoring of agricultural production through the analysis of vegetation indices, crop conditions and changes in plots.

Validation Strategy

Where and how we validate ABS Veggie

Location

The pilot implementation is being implemented on two plots of 0.5 hectares each in Serbia, in Žabalj (Vojvodina).

Timeframe

One full production cycle:
cabbage: July – November
onion: September – June

Method

Co-creation, testing and validation of the system on a real farm with continuous feedback from farmers, using EO measurements, drones and digital traceability tools.

Goal

To reach TRL 8 technology readiness level with confirmed field performance, high usability and scalability of the system.

OPEN DAY

ABS Veggie Open Day Successfully Held

Location

We successfully organized the ABS Veggie Open Day at the partner farm PG Svetislav Pačarić in Žablj, as part of the Farmtopia project, funded by the EU Horizon Europe program.

The event brought together farmers, agronomists, advisors, technology solution providers and other stakeholders involved in the future of sustainable and climate-resilient agriculture.

Through practical field demonstrations and presentations, we demonstrated how digital technologies can help small and medium-sized vegetable producers improve productivity, sustainability and decision-making processes.

Key objectives

During the Open Day event, we successfully achieved the key objectives defined within the Farmtopia Open Day dissemination framework:

Promotion of digital agricultural solutions among farmers and stakeholders
Demonstration of practical application of EO technologies
Strengthening cooperation between farmers, technology companies and advisors
Raising awareness of climate-resilient agricultural practices
Presentation of innovative tools developed within the ABS Veggie platform
Dissemination and increasing visibility of Farmtopia project activities and EU Horizon support
